From Teacher to "Metaverse" Explorer: My Journey to Creating a Roblox Unit

It all started with a familiar scene: students playing a game on their laptops when they should have been focused on the lesson. The game was on Roblox, a platform I initially saw as a distraction. It was only when I began to listen to my students and their experiences that I realized how important the platform had been for them, especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns. I came to see the platform not as a nuisance, but as a digital lifeline that had helped my students cope with isolation and stay connected.

This new perspective planted a seed of curiosity. My fascination grew this summer when I heard about Roblox CEO David Baszucki's plans to introduce a virtual dating feature for adults on the platform. This was a truly "metaverse" moment for me—the platform I had once seen as a simple game for kids was now actively evolving to address real-world issues like loneliness among adults. This led me to a central question: what other aspects of our modern world are embedded within this platform that our students are so deeply connected to?

This question became the driving force behind my new, comprehensive Roblox unit. I was determined to use a platform students were already passionate about as a case study for understanding bigger concepts. The result is a six-part bundle that explores Roblox from multiple, academic angles. It’s a resource that teaches media literacy, digital ethics, and youth culture by using the language and digital landscape that students already know and speak.

My initial frustration with students playing on Roblox transformed into a deep, personal project. I learned to see the platform as a rich educational tool, and my own curiosity led me to create a resource that I believe can empower students to analyze the digital world they inhabit.
